P.E.O. was organized by 7 students of Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant IA on Jan. 21, 1869, as the second college sorority to be founded in America. Its work is educational, social and philantropic and now the largest independent secret organization of women in the world. It owns Cottey College, a junior college for girls in Nevada, MO., and maintains a permanent educational fund to lend money to worthy girls to enable them to obtain a higher education. The local chapter also supports the P.E.O. Home for retired ladies in Knoxville IL.
